    Conclusion
We continue to be impressed with what Sony is doing in its imaging department at the moment, showing that it's a real leader in terms of both innovation and final image quality. While it's true that this is hardly going to be a mass market seller for consumers, for somebody who wants exactly what the Sony RX1-R is offering, they won't be disappointed. It's worth considering the type of photographer you are, though, before parting with any cash. Predominantly landscape, street and nature photographers will be fine with this, but those who favour portraits and architecture scenes may want to consider the risk of moiré patterning and increased post-production work that may be necessary.First reviewed 2 July 2013

  • Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1

    Design: 10/10
    Features: 9/10
    Ease-of-use: 9/10
    Image quality: 10/10
    Value for money: 9/10

    Conclusion
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 is a compact camera like no other, delivering full-frame 35mm image quality paired with a fantastic lens in a compact and highly customisable body. No camera is perfect - the auto-focusing is a little sluggish, the cost of the optional accessories is eye-watering, especially if you follow our advice and buy the almost-essential electronic viewfinder, we don't like the in-camera battery charging or the short life, and the fixed lens will simply put off many people - but all in all there's nothing to beat the RX1 if it matches your photographic vision.

  • Sony RX1 review

    Plus

    • Large, full-frame sensor
    • Beautiful craftsmanship
    • Excellent lens

    Minus

    • No touchscreen
    • Terrible battery life
    • Very high price

    Conclusion
When this camera was announced it caused a lot of excitement. It's the world's smallest digital full-frame camera, and so it raised a lot of eyebrows.Image quality is superb, but there are a fair few limitations that mean this camera could never be described as perfect. It's exciting to see Sony producing a camera like this, because it shows exactly what the electronics giant is capable of. That's a good thing, even if it's not something that will be snapped up by a wide population.

    •Full frame in a compact, well-built body
•Dedicated aperture and exposure compensation controls
•Exceptional build-quality - solid feeling without being too heavy
•Superb high ISO output in both JPEG and Raw images
    •Essentially silent operation
    •Wide dynamic range Raw files
•Pleasing metering and white balance results
•Good level of customization to tune camera to your needs
•Auto ISO and exposure comp. available in manual mode
    •1080p60 video with mic input
•Clever Auto modes and processing features if you want them
    •USB charging is convenient

    Cons:
•Autofocus speed not fast enough for moving subjects
    •Autofocus struggles in low light
•Significant vignetting (as with similar lenses), corrections 'baked into' Raw files
•Multiple button presses required to move AF point
•No built-in viewfinder (and accessory options rather expensive)
•No focus guides for video shooters
•Disappointing video quality even when in focus
•Focus peaking in un-magnified live view would have been a major benefit
•Rear shoulder dial makes it less engaging to shoot in shutter-priority mode
•Can't shoot X.Fine JPEG and Raw
•No option to re-process Raw in camera
•Lack of included charger makes it harder to keep a spare battery charged
•The standard Sony Alpha function screen seems simplistic and inappropriate for this camera
•Laggy to engage magnified image review
•Awkward separation of movie and stills in playback
