  • Sony A77

    Design: 10/10
    Features: 10/10
    Ease-of-use: 9/10
    Image quality: 9/10
    Value for money: 10/10

    Conclusion
The Sony A77 is a big leap forward for Sony's DSLR range, offering a feature-set, handling and performance that beats its main rivals. The new 24.3 megapixel sensor offers greatly increased resolution without impacting on low-light performance or operational speed, while the OLED viewfinder is simply the best EVF that we've ever had the pleasure of using. The inclusion of full 1080p movies, built-in GPS, 12fps burst shooting, dual control dials, top-panel LCD and an excellent 3-way rear screen make the A77 our new favourite prosumer DSLR.

  • Sony Alpha A77 review

    Plus

    • Blisteringly fast phase detection AF
    • Very good overall image quality
    • Weather sealing and decent build
    • Plenty of dedicated controls
    • Comprehensive feature-set

    Minus

    • Reduced battery life
    • EVF may not suit everyone
    • Aggressive noise reduction in JPEGs at high ISOs
    • Slower start-up than an equivalent DSLR
    • Lag when switching between EVF and LCD

    Conclusion
Overall, there are only a few minor niggles to comment on with the Sony Alpha A77 - namely a bit of a sluggish start-up time, slight delay when switching between using the EVF and LCD for shooting and high ISO noise performance that, while still very good, doesn't quite match that of its major rivals. That said, when weighing these up against a superb level of image quality when shooting in most conditions, great handling, good build quality, industry-leading EVF, quick full-time phase detection AF system and a comprehensive set of exposure modes, we have little trouble with recommending this excellent camera.

    Overall: 8/10

With its shooting speeds and focus skills that put DSLRs to shame, the translucent-mirror-equipped Sony Alpha A77 is an exciting newcomer to the camera world.

  • No grade
    Sony SLT-A77

    Pros:
    •Excellent 2.4 million-dot OLED EVF
    •Versatile full-time live view system
•Very high-resolution 24MP CMOS sensor (but see caveats in 'cons', below)
•Exceptionally 'deep' feature set including Auto HDR and Sweep Panorama
    •Class-leading video resolution
    •Solid, well thought-out ergonomics
    •Fast and responsive operation
•Very good continuous shooting performance (particularly with UHS-I memory card)
•Efficient SteadyShot INSIDE image stabilization system
    •In-camera GPS
    •Good battery life

    Cons:
•In-camera JPEGs don't show off the 24MP sensor to its best extent
•Comparatively strong noise reduction at medium and high ISO settings
•Very noisy raw files at high ISO settings
•Little control over high ISO noise reduction in JPEG mode ('auto' or 'weak')
•Limited control in 12 fps continuous shooting and movie modes
•No live view in 8 or 12 fps continuous shooting modes makes accurate panning very difficult
•Menu system a little confusing (hard to orientate yourself sometimes)
•Slightly 'laggy' menu system and UI.
•Awkward to navigate between stills and movie playback modes
